Friday, October 9, 7:30-10:30pm: Runaway Sun Listening Party at Little Bigs. With little more than a year together and only armed with their debut EP, Runaway Sun was nominated at the 2009 Houston Press Music Awards for “Best Blues Group” in Houston. They’ve opened up for Davy Knowles and Back DDoor Slam and recently recorded their much anticipated debut full-length album. Come give it a listen before you can buy it and meet the band! October 9-10, 7 pm: pre-show; 8 pm: performance | Dance: Splendid China IV. Chinese culture comes to life when the Shanghai Dance Company takes the stage at Miller Outdoor Theatre. The company’s highly anticipated Houston debut features all-new dazzling and acrobatic choreography performed by China’s top dancers. A rising star in China, Shanghai Dance Company has captured the hearts of adoring audiences all over the world. The company has won numerous medals and national recognitions at China’s most prestigious dance competitions. Friday, August 28 | 8-11 pm | Houston Center for Photography: Spin5 - Flashdance!  Inspired by the 1983 film Flashdance, DJ Shoe will spin songs from the era with projections from the film itself setting the mood for the party. Kelly Myernick, first soloist with the Houston Ballet and other members of the company will perform and instruct enthusiastic crowd-goers to learn an 80’s inspired dance piece. A surprise performance is scheduled for later in the evening. Attendees are also invited to rock out on the “dance pole” and ballet barres.  The party isn’t complete without photography; attendees can pose in front of 80’s themed backdrops and contribute ’80s-style pictures to be installed or projected on HCP’s walls. The best image which features the photographer as a performer will be included in the upcoming HCP exhibition, Artist as Performer, on view at HCP from September 10 - November 8.  $10 in advance or $15 at the door.  www.hcponline.org.  1441 W. 6 pm - 8 pm | Opening | Blaffer Gallery - Existed: Leonardo Drew. Leonardo Drew’s first mid-career survey in the United States. Existed: Leonardo Drew will include a major installation created in the gallery space, 14 major sculptures realized between 1991 and 2005, and 12 works on paper made between 2005 and 2008, which together offer a representative survey of Drew’s artistic development as well as speak to the relevance of the direction the work is taking today.  www.blaffergallery.org.

1 pm | Conversation at Inman Gallery w/ Katrina Moorhead + Michelle White.  Michelle White, Assistant Curator, Menil  Collection, regional editor of Art Lies, and contributor to Art Papers.  a darkling plain is Katrina Moorhead’s second solo exhibition with the gallery and her first since winning several prestigious awards including the 2007 Texas Art Prize (Arthouse), a 2008 Artadia Artist Award, and a 2008 Joan Mitchell Foundation Award.  In a darkling plain, Moorhead has focused on the the very real phenomenon wherein, due to volcanic activity, islands can appear and disappear in a human-scaled time period. The work explores the unusual collision of geological destiny and human desire, in a poignant presentation which underscores the duality of simultaneous discovery and loss.  Inman Gallery, 3901 Main Street.  www.inmangallery.com.

unspring.jpg5 pm | United Nations’ Tenth Anniversary Spring Concert: A Choral Kaleidoscope.  Distinguished by a commissioned work, That the Dove May Rest, by Minnesota composer Jan Gilbert and features internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Adriana Zabala, accompanied by Space City Gamelan + other instruments.  The choir also welcomes illustrious and UH faculty member Cynthia Clayton and eminent bass David Keck as soloists in its performance of Felix Mendelssohn’s seldom-heard Magnificat, with orchestra. 5 pm - 7 pm | Opening | Gallery Sonja Roesch: Jan van der Ploeg.  Jan van der Ploeg is interested in the relationship between art and the public sphere. He constructs site-specific wall painting installations, both indoors and outdoors, that react with the surrounding architecture and atmosphere. Attracted to repetition, his work relates painting, sculpture, system, and seriality. The scale of these wall-size, and even building-size, installations consider not only the architectural surroundings but also the viewer’s participation. Through July 4.  2309 Caroline Street.  www.gallerysonjaroesch.com.
