In a darkling plain, Moorhead has focused on the the very real phenomenon wherein, due to volcanic activity, islands can appear and disappear in a human-scaled time period. The work explores the unusual collision of geological destiny and human desire, in a poignant presentation which underscores the duality of simultaneous discovery and loss. Tonight! Closing Reception for Molly Gochman’s Spring
Closing Reception
Wednesday, May 6, 2009
5:30 p.m. - mint juleps, standard beverages, and hors d’œuvres in the garden outside the gallery
7:00 p.m. - conversation with the artist
Spring focuses on a series of large-scale images derived from Kodachrome slides of Molly Gochman’s mother. With these she communicates ideas relating to perception, time and layers. Gochman revisits images and memories of her childhood, exploring the difference between the surviving photographs and her own reminiscences. She looks at the past from today’s perspective and develops a project that is abstract and philosophical while at the same time profoundly personal.
The exhibition consists of a collection of photographic prints, edited and selected in a long process of recollection and visual analysis. The artist’s search for pictorial beauty and meaning in each image reflects a psychoanalytical approach to the past and the change it embodies. A slide installation of some of the selections from the archive will also be presented.
